A big first-day propelled the Phoenix wrestling team to a sixth-place finish at the Nor-Cal Beast of the North wrestling tournament in Anderson, CA over the weekend.

Ishmael DeLaTorre's second-place finish at heavyweight was the top effort for the Pirates, who had the majority of their wrestlers still in the mix after Friday's action. While the Pirates weren't able to replicate that effort on Saturday, they still compiled 116 team points to finish sixth in the 36-team field.

DeLaTorre won his first four matches before dropping a 4-2 decision to Luis Penick of Anderson Union in the championship.

Other top finishes for PHS included Elijah Santana fourth, Ezra DeLuca fifth and Elijah Galatioto sixth. Dalton Samis, Yovanni Chavez, Elijah Leonis, Mike Walker and Dalton Samis all picked up two wins on the weekend.

The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, heading to Klamath Union for Skyline Conference duals.
