Seven runs over the final three innings weren't enough to complete a rally for the Phoenix softball team on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pirates nearly made up all of nine-run deficit but eventually fell to Hidden Valley 11-9 in a Skyline Confernce softball game in Talent.
PHS put three runs on the board in the fifth and four more in the seventh before the Mustangs extinguished the rally. Phoenix fell to 1-9 in conference play and 5-11 overall.
Brooke Kentner staked the Pirates to a 2-1 lead with a first-inning home run. The senior outfielder later added a bases-clearing triple, driving in three more runs. She collected three hits on the day.
Makenna Page also had three hits while Claire Mathewson and Josie Bolstad added two apiece.
The series resumes Saturday with a doubleheader in Murphy.
