Pirate girls drop opener to Cougars

The Phoenix girls' basketball team had some first-game jitters on Tuesday night.
Despite a slow start offensively, the Pirates were still in the game vs. visiting Illinois Valley and trailed by only two points after three quarters of play. Unfortunately, PHS wasn't able to take charge in the final quarter, dropping a 37-29 decision to the Cougars.
Giselle Perez-Hernandez scored six points to pace Phoenix, which got five points from Bella Lopez and nine rebounds from Delani Parent.
Phoenix returns to action on Friday, visiting Sweet Home.
