Host Phoenix played a pair of close games against Sutherlin on Tuesday night but eventually fell in three sets to the visiting Bulldogs.
Sutherlin won the opener 25-21 and the final set 25-22, sandwiched between was a 25-11 victory.
Katelyn Hanson had four kills, three blocks and three aces for the Pirates, who got seven kills and two blocks from Kassidy Calhoun, three kills and five digs from Avery Reneau, six digs from Abi George and 14 assists from Sophia Tringolo.
The Pirates (3-4 in non-conference play) will open Skyline Conference play on Thursday night at Mazama before taking part in the Rogue Valley Classic at North Medford on Saturday.
